RPW Capstone Project

I worked in a group of three to complete my project for the Rhetoric and Professional Writing (RPW) Capstone. We were tasked with updating and redesigning these materials for the RPW program:

  • The RPW poster

  • The RPW brochure

  • The ePortfolio Help Guide

Cincinnati Nature Center Signs

For this assignment, I worked in a group of four to create a couple of signs focused on informing visitors of the Cincinnati Nature Center's restoration efforts. I helped write and edit the text on the signs and gave input on the design. The Nature Center instructed us to create three different signs: a main, relatively general static sign (green sign) that could be placed near different restoration projects, a sign focused on the invasive Amur Honeysuckle (first blue sign), and a sign focused on highlighting the benefits of native plants (second blue sign). The goal of the signs is to educate visitors on the Nature Center's current restoration work, instruct them to stay on the trail, and encourage them to implement restoration efforts in their own yards.

Copyediting a Web-based paper

For this assignment, I had to copyedit a blog post in Editing Professional Documents. I had to review this blog post and make any corrections using track changes in Word to showcase my ability as an editor. I checked for grammatical accuracy, awkward phrasing, and inconsistency with the company's chosen style guide: CMS. The audience of the assignment was the company’s boss and the author. This project showcases my ability to copyedit a blog post, and it also showcases my ability to communicate with an author.

Creating a Style Guide

For this assignment, I had to create a style guide for the Harvard Business Review. I was given a couple of pages to read from the magazine and was instructed to create a short style guide by looking at the writing on these pages. I studied the pages to identify anything that should go in the style guide and referenced the CMS when creating my style guide. The audience of this assignment is Harvard Business Review employees, and it's intended to be a quick reference resource for them to check. This assignment showcases my ability to create a style guide based on a magazine.

Short Documentary on Bill Cunningham

For this assignment, I created a short documentary on Bill Cunningham, who was a legendary New York City street photographer. I was encouraged to use Photoshop to manipulate the images by isolating the subjects and changing the photograph’s colors. The main purpose of the project was to effectively inform people of Cunningham's life and impact in a short amount of time. The intended audience is anyone who is interested in photography, fashion, and the people of New York. This project showcases my Photoshop and Adobe Premiere Pro skills.

Developmental Editing Report

For this assignment, I worked in a group of four to create a mock developmental editing report for a fake article, which showcases my ability to read an article and provide structural feedback. All four of us read the article, and then we got together to discuss how we should format our report. We each wrote a section and edited each other's work. The audience of the report is the author. This assignment showcases my ability to edit and provide detailed feedback in a group setting.

Sample Business Emails

I had to write four different business emails for an assignment in Business Writing. Each email needed to include a salutation, brief pleasantry, purpose, call-to-action, and closing message. Each of the four mock emails was for a different scenario:

  •  A neutral email asking for a person to attend my event

  • A negative email using an indirect method (responding to a customer when I could not grant their request)

  • A positive email using a direct method (responding to a customer when I could grant their request)

  • An unsolicited persuasive email
